Computer addiction in adolescents

Computer addiction in adolescents - this is a pathological addiction to a computer with a maximum time spent behind it. For the first time, some experts started talking about this addiction in the 1980s, but many did not recognize this diagnosis. But the fact remains that an obsessive, pathological addiction of people to spending most of their time at the computer is more obvious and therefore problematic every year in modern society. Particularly disturbing is the fact that adolescents are becoming more susceptible to computer addiction.

Computer addiction in adolescents finds itself in several forms: gambling and Internet addiction. At present, the treatment of computer addiction is not even properly developed, and with this frightening phenomenon, many parents are left alone.

Causes of computer addiction in adolescents

There are several causes of computer addiction. A computer is a powerful tool for processing and storing information, and therefore this feature becomes attractive for many individuals. But computer addiction in adults cannot compare with the catastrophe that occurs in adolescents who need specific treatment for this condition. For a teenager, as for a thinking person, access to information is of great importance, and the wider it is, the more attractive it is.

Researchers have discovered an alarming fact: the age of active use of computers is decreasing and today there are few who can be surprised that 6-year-old children use the technique better than many adults.

Parents, having given unlimited access to a computer, at first rejoice when the child is always at home, quietly sitting, does not interfere with doing their business and having a rest. It would seem that there is nothing bad in it, because the earlier a person learns the basics of working with a computer, the better it will be, but there are disturbing statistics indicating a new disease - computer addiction. This is due to the fact that the teenage psyche has not yet been formed and is very vulnerable, for it is not without reason that teenagers instantly become addicted to bad habits.

The problem of computer dependence in adolescents most acutely arose in the period of rapid development of information technologies and modern children do not represent their life, leisure and study without a computer at all. Psychologists are alarmed by the fact that computer games are addictive, which is analogous to narcotic. Currently, the computer in the life of a teenager ranks first in importance.

As a teenager to wean from the computer, or at least distract? This interests many parents. Adults need to tell children about their experiences, but without using prohibitions, reading morals and scandals. Such methods are effective for ten-year-olds, but not sixteen-year-olds.

Symptoms of computer addiction in adolescents

The child quickly changes mood, perception of the world, routine. Computer games replace food and sleep, real communication with friends. Rapid fatigue, irritability, isolation, stealthiness, aggressiveness appear. A child who spends a lot of time behind the monitor forgets about his duties, household chores, schooling, meetings, arrangements, hygiene, and experiences a feeling of emotional lift only during the game.

Symptoms of gambling in children include increasing pastime behind the monitor; full concentration on the game, refusal to spend time with friends, inability to control oneself, not holding back promises to parents about ending the game, forgetfulness, withdrawal syndrome - the inability to sit at the monitor causes fury, aggression, crying, isolation.

Separately note the physical symptoms of sufferers from addiction to the computer. This is a headache, dry eyes, back pain, weight loss, changing sleep patterns.

What attracts children in a virtual game? Online games give children a sense of competitive effect that creates excitement. Thus, the addiction to a computer is formed in children, this happens especially quickly if a child is successful in a virtual game and not in real life. Role-playing games are dangerous for inspired children who copy the behavior of their characters. It is necessary for adults to look closely at which games the offspring plays. Virtual modern games are made so qualitatively that the personality with a low level of criticality erases the line between its imitation and reality.

Signs of computer addiction in adolescents

Gaming addiction to the computer is dangerous because of its grave consequences. Being in the virtual world, a teenager is almost never adequately able to control real time and is late everywhere: he misses his lessons, skips school.

The problem of computer dependence in adolescents appears in the form of aggression, which occurs in the process of games. If something does not come out of the child, then a storm of emotions arises, is destabilized, and the psyche is also shaken. All negative teen brings to the real world.

The problem of virtual communication also manifests itself in the fact that a child's personality is greatly disappointed in real life, in which everything is not so simple, and communicating with a computer, a child sooner or later everything starts to turn out.

Signs of computer addiction can be expressed in visual impairment, vitamin deficiency, unhealthy diet (quick snacks), personal hygiene, etc.

Treatment of computer addiction in adolescents

Due to the fact that addiction to a computer negatively affects the child's psyche, it is considered to be a serious danger, and if this process is not stopped in time, then there will be a lot of problems that will have to be resolved with the help of a psychotherapist.

What should parents do with gaming computer addiction? It makes no sense to scold, punish, a teenager, because aggression and hysteria will be in response. From the addiction should rid the teenager correctly. Parents need to understand that they will not be able to rid the child forever of the computer. Subsequently, knowledge of the computer will play a positive role: the child will learn more successfully, prepare for exams, but it is still necessary to reduce the influence of the computer. Parents should talk about the insecurity of long sitting behind the monitor.

Often, gaming computer addiction turns into a clear problem at the age of 10 years and therefore adults should monitor the time the child stays behind the monitor so that there is no painful addiction. It is necessary to carry the child along with the computer in other activities: sports, creativity, travel, nature trips. If a child is addicted to games, it is recommended that parents diversify their lives with educational or sports games and participate in them themselves, for example, Management, football, volleyball, tennis, badminton, swimming, martial arts.

It is necessary to limit the use of internet by a child and set time limits. Teenagers can be allowed to sit at the monitor for up to 2 hours a day.

Treatment of computer addiction in a teenager is a rather long and difficult process, requiring the participation of the child and the parents. After the failure of a teenager to play games, it is necessary to fill the void in life with some creativity or occupation, a new hobby. To get rid of a teenager from Internet addiction should be tactful, it is impossible to completely prohibit the use of a computer. A child will not feel comfortable if he feels different from everyone, giving up completely from the computer. However, to allow the child to constantly play without rules and time constraints is also impossible. Often, children’s personalities involved in computers turn into secluded ones, lose interest in education, stop communicating, show aggression towards their loved ones.

If a teenager is increasingly asking to be left alone, while he skips classes at school, sits at a computer all night long, does not get enough sleep, refuses to eat, then all the signs of computer addiction are on his face. Attempts to self-relieve from this addiction often lead to depression, which retreats after the child returns to his usual sitting at the monitor. In this case, the psychotherapist will be an assistant in treating computer addiction.

Many parents doubt the need for treatment in the adolescent addiction to the computer, referring it to the hobby. Dependence is dangerous in that adolescents of this age period (14–16 years old) are at the most difficult stage of their development, which can cause further psychological problems to arise. Instead, a teenager sits at the computer all the time when he has to start building his first relationship with the opposite sex, set meaningful goals for himself, and look for his place in society. The most correct solution for gaming computer addiction will be to seek help from specialists who will give valuable recommendations and will begin an effective treatment. The treatment of this condition is based on the experience of addiction therapy.
