Hatred of humanity does not manifest itself to every individual, but to the total mass, which thoughtlessly follows the herd instincts of fulfilling stupid and imposed rules, dogmas and other established public or tacit laws defining emotions and behavior. Annoying stupidity, lack of education, the ability to make mistakes, refusals to think and accept individual responsibility instead of subordination and care for moral norms. The number of friends of the misanthrope is usually small, but the relationship is warm and humane, loving.

The word misanthrope is the antonym of the word human-loving, and is not synonymous with a social phobia. Misanthropy is a feature, whereas sociopathy is a diagnosis of the psychiatric spectrum, suggesting a painful fear of society, an inability to control this feeling.

A misanthrope can communicate with everyone and wants this with select people, his unsociation is justified rather by disgust than fear.

What is a misanthrope?

A misanthrope is a person who keeps away from people, shows individualism, developed in a rather critical form, expresses misanthropic thoughts (can, how to enjoy it, admiring its grandeur and difference from the poorness of others, and may suffer from underdeveloped society and the inability to interact). Misanthropy can manifest itself periodically, or it can be the basic life philosophy of a person. The impetus for its development is a certain personality structure, peculiar to people with character accentuation of an individualistic and paranoid type, psychopathic personalities.

Misanthropy can be a concomitant feature of the development of psychiatric diseases and have a certain impact on their course (as in paranoid schizophrenia, a delusional construction will take on embodiment in the form of delusions of persecution, where society will be guilty of causing imaginary offenses). In this case, all by itself, misanthropy alone is not the cause of the occurrence of psychiatric disorders and is not itself a deviation from the norm.

There is an opinion that a misanthrope is a person who is not capable of any manifestations of feelings other than hatred, he is a cold and insensitive subject. But misanthropes are able to build absolutely normal relationships and experience feelings. The only difference is that the people representing the close circle, the misanthrope carefully filters, every time, seriously choosing to be friends with. In a situation where a person suffers from a mistake, a misanthrope and philanthropist will notice this situation with the same speed and force of reaction, they will only react with different vectors - the philanthropist will rush to help the needy, and the misanthrope will move away, wrinkling from the human error.

The selectivity of a misanthropic response can have different specificity of manifestation depending on the degree of manifestation (tolerance of entry into society or complete retreat), on the degree of response (tacit perception of what is happening or stormy indignation), on targeting a certain group of people (gender, age, nationality), response to a particular offense or absolutely any shortcomings. The combination of these factors adds a unique pattern of each person’s misanthropic response.

Characteristic signs of a misanthrope can be: reluctance to contact in public places (can sit alone in the square, in a public garden, go to exhibitions, while being afraid that someone will start a conversation), reluctance to fill conversational pauses with empty topics (silence does not strain) , unwillingness to answer the phone (in the priority of messages in various communication services), purchases through Internet sites are preferable to going to the store.

Misanthrope and philanthropist are fundamental opposites. While the former are wary of people, and even through positive qualities they continue to look for negativity, the latter unconditionally believe in humanity as a whole and try to be kind and helpful towards everyone, familiar or not, guilty or injured. The irony is that the person shakes between these two opposite poles. And the philanthropist, once again stumbling upon ingratitude, meanness, especially in moments when his kindness is used and then betrayed, becomes a misanthrope, hatred of people who is confirmed by facts and emotional wounds of disappointment. But there is also a reverse process, when thanks to someone from the surrounding people, the inveterate misanthrope suddenly gives the world a chance, begins to doubt the inferiority of humanity and this process delays it so much that it turns out to be at the other pole - philanthropy.

Misanthrope - the meaning of the word

Literally translated from Greek, misanthropy is designated as misanthropy, but the concept is much larger and is seen more broadly in the context of nuances. The concept after the Moliere comedy “Misanthrope”, where the protagonist is depicted in a negative light, with grotesquely pointed features of misanthropy, spread and came into use, which served as a deliberately negative attitude and use of this concept to characterize vicious traits.

The misanthrope is the antonym of the philanthropist, but it has much more synonyms, which reveals the multifaceted essence of the concept. In the context of misanthropy, one can speak not only about hatred of humanity and the social order, but also about seclusion, retreat, savagery, uniqueness, high demands. Playing on the contrasts of antonyms and synonyms to clarify the essence of the concept is not relevant and expedient, because a misanthrope can show philanthropic traits while doing charity work (behind this can be the desire to raise one’s self-esteem, the desire for profit, the creation of an image — no option is motivated by a desire to help or love for humanity).

Misanthropy is not expressed in cutting off all contacts, but in their restriction, in avoiding too close contacts, with those who are not in the close circle of a person. Hatred can take the form of a lack of causeless sympathy, neglect, heightened criticism.

At home, a misanthrope can be kind, empathetic and friendly. But he will not be involved in maintaining the traditions and rules that were invented by the majority. A person will wear a festive attire when the festive mood, and not when the calendar indicates (i.e. ignore the New Year traditions and go to sleep - quite in the spirit of a misanthrope). In a working atmosphere, misanthropy is usually not noticeable, people are adequate and able not to express out loud their attitude to the nonsense that is going on.

Misanthropy does not have a targeted focus on one person, such an irritated and critical attitude concerns the whole of humanity, while the person himself tries to distance himself and oppose the total mass of the crowd, which merges into a single unreasonable organism. With the apparent coldness, the misanthropes are supersensitive, it is this sensitivity that severely hurts them in cases of injustice, causing injury and giving rise to a mechanism for avoiding protection, resulting in a misanthropic philosophy and way of life.

Dislike for society is associated with a sense of contempt for low levels of development and intellectual abilities, for human weaknesses and lack of character, a tendency to repeat mistakes. According to the misanthrope, a person must be a more perfect form and not slide down to the animal level, which often happens everywhere and makes you distance yourself from humanity. But such demands are manifested in relation to themselves, the emphasis is on constant self-development and compliance with internal standards of morality, the ability to critically evaluate and choose what is necessary, and not to follow everyone.

From the foregoing, it appears that misanthropic traits cannot be attributed solely to a positive or negative spectrum. Someone is wary of such people, and someone wants to become like them, looking for ways to develop misanthropy.

If a person has learned to live by adjusting the interaction of his inner world and the surrounding reality, then it does not matter what are the features of his personality.

Misanthropes are able to establish good relationships, build families and succeed in the outside world, despite the lack of a strong desire to interact with people. Among the well-known misanthropes there are many philosophers and thinkers, and it is precisely this peculiarity that makes their reasoning interesting and devoid of embellishment of reality.

Schopenhauer hated this world, but his works are in demand through the centuries, Jean-Jacques Rousseau had a bad character and brought many of his creations to the world, Nietzsche despised the fundamental concepts of culture and morality, criticized religion and read throughout the world. Thanks to his unsociable nature and his preference for less contact with people, Przhevalsky began studying animals, and Tchaikovsky wrote many works. Even such a public profession, like an actor, did not change the misanthropicity of Bill Murray, because introversion does not affect talent.

But there are in the history and examples of the bearing and destructive side of the concept of misanthrope. Adolf Hitler hated certain qualities in people from birth, and sought to purify humanity, create a better race — all these misanthropic ideas were at their peak. Stalin’s methods are also opposed to the principles of philanthropy.

Misanthropy leaves no one indifferent, such people can be admired (most often they are very erudite, have a fine sense of humor, enviable intelligence) or hate (for criticism, unwillingness to submit to socially invented norms, for choosing not to communicate with those who do not want to). The quality is so ambiguous and magnetic that it influenced fictional characters - Sherlock Holmes, Dr. House.
