Selflessness is an accumulated and consciously controlled behavior or instinctively inherent quality of a person, which manifests itself at an effective level and implies a highly developed inner personal ability to control, ignore and sacrifice your own needs with the sincere goal of ensuring the good of others. The extreme degree of manifestation of this feature is observed during the paramilitary events, achieving the ability of a person to sacrifice life, violating the evolutionary laws of self-preservation, for the sake of saving others or performing tasks that have security implications. Accordingly, the need for dedication in general scales arises in wartime, under exceptional, dangerous, extraordinary, extraordinary circumstances that require exceeding the duties assigned to a person.

Considering dedication, life examples are usually based on the feats of life sacrifice for the most colorful description, but there are not vivid, although more often encountered in everyday life, not so hypertrophied manifestations. In addition to the behavior controlled by logical calculation, this quality is also found in not so highly developed forms of the animal world, being the instinct laid down at the physiological level to preserve the integrity of the species. Instinctive manifestations of self-sacrifice are inherent to bees in protecting their own hive (stinging, dying, but scaring off danger from others), most animals protect their offspring (to fight with a predator, give the last food) - nature laid down this quality not for saving an individual, but for preservation of gene material and further reproduction of the species.

Meaning of the word dedication

The word dedication implies a sacrifice of one’s own interests, the rejection of one’s desires and needs, includes the presence of some lofty idea, ideals or strong feelings that serve as motivation for such an act. It is believed that this is a positive quality, discussing dedication, examples from literature present heroes who display this trait as people of the highest degree of spiritual development, professing true moral values.

However, there is a negative context of this quality, when the self is depreciated and degraded, or with the help of such behavior a person tries to rise above others, knowing a biased positive attitude to self-sacrifice. Sacrifice is justified and meaningless, decent and manipulative. Often, people put their lives in favor of others, because they do not want to be responsible for their manifestations, losses and failures, such selflessness has nothing to do with the positive characteristics of quality, but testifies to the weakness and infantilism of the individual. In addition to renouncing the construction of one’s own activity, sacrifice for the interests of others may not be completely appreciated by these people, and sometimes it can be a choking concern (for example, a mother, who strenuously cares about her 40-year-old son and enters into all his affairs, does not allow him to live life is not engaged). The expected gratitude, admiration and other expected positive moments remain inaccessible, since the act itself did not bear sincere and appropriate manifestation, but was only a course of manipulation. In such a relationship, dedication ultimately acquires the character of sacrifice, of offended exaltation over those who have not appreciated, and a constant feeling of dissatisfaction.

It is possible to speak about the positive manifestation of this quality, referring to as selflessness, not sacrifice, pleasing, spineless, in the context of sincere motives, striving to do better for others without seeking your own benefit and waiting for grateful reactions. A focus that focuses exclusively on others, when one does not notice one’s own difficulties or needs that can lead to such an act. It is important to understand that the actions performed are always beyond the limits of the necessary fulfillment, be it actions attributed to feats or those about which no one will ever know. There is no contact between selflessness and selfishness; strong will and striving for high ideals, constant overcoming of oneself, and sometimes deep programs of self-preservation instinct for the sake of conscience and high morality are also necessary.

Most of all, this word is mentioned in the characteristics of the Soviet time and feats in military battles, it was considered one of the main features contributing to the political and social development of man. On this concept, the younger generation was brought up and such dedication was demanded from adults, but this concerned exclusively political, state and military topics. If a person chose to sacrifice his own career or the interests of the state for the sake of preserving the life of his family, this was stopped, depending on the severity of the act, even to the death penalty. The integrity and survival of a socialist society were maintained by similar methods, just as the survival of the species is maintained in nature.

The deeds of dedication are not always unambiguous in their definition and depend on the party conducting the analysis. Also, they do not always bring a certain result.

Selflessness is governed by the internal morality of the individual and is not amenable to influence from the outside; it cannot be inscribed in the rules and regulations because it is outside of them. And if the observance of any behavioral manifestations may require a charter or unspoken rules, then manifestation of dedication cannot be demanded by any authority, except the conscience of the person and his inner spiritual core. This feature can be considered as an activity manifestation of such imperceptible and theoretical concepts as humanism, morality, courage. Sometimes this property is impulsive and instant, sometimes a person needs to make volitional efforts and show character, but the desire will be indicated by a lack of desire to achieve personal gain and the priority of the good of others.

Examples of dedication

Selflessness is based on feelings of sincere love, friendship, patriotism, and it is for the sake of such concepts that their own desires are relegated to the background. Studying dedication, life examples can be cited as varied and surprising, but it should be borne in mind that we can encounter its manifestations every day, observing it in maternal love, since neither own pleasures, nor health, nor life will become priorities for the mother under the threat to her child. The selfless behavior of a woman is largely due to instincts, survival programs and changes in hormonal balance, but at the same time in such manifestations there will be no falsehood and hypocrisy, the desire to gain or praise. In the first stages of life, all renunciations are truly pure and filled with a deep sense of happiness for the baby; you can talk about the mechanisms of avoidance and manipulation when the mother continues to sacrifice herself when the child has grown up or is not in danger.

There are people who have chosen themselves professions that require constant dedication: the first who come to mind are lifeguards and firefighters, who out of duty risk their own lives and health to help those who are in trouble. People with a low level of selflessness, who believe that everyone who finds himself in a difficult situation should be guilty himself and should get out himself, will not choose such specialties, which by and large should be counted not as professions, but as vocations. Volunteers who work in shelters and on the front line, who spend their time and energy and subject the psyche to various traumatisations, as well as putting their lives at risk are examples of selflessness. Although the motivation is also different, because, despite the lack of direct monetary benefits, volunteering may increase a sense of self-importance, receive various benefits, avoid solving problems of personal life or striving for fame, by doing something like disinterested help. Secondary benefits are everywhere, but whether a person notices them or acts on the basis of intrapersonal morality is an indicator of selflessness.

Of the more vivid examples transmitted in historical chronicles are heroic feats during hostilities, when people were wound with explosives, threw under enemy tanks or covered the possibility of shelling with their bodies, when they did not hand over information in captivity and died under torture . Examples ending in a sad death for one and the opportunity to stay alive for many.

This quality in its crystal manifestation is admirable and is widely used in art. Revealing dedication, examples from the literature most often use a love theme, playing on the degree of renunciation. This is usually seen as evidence of strong and unconditional love, when the hero is able to give up his city, work, or past habits for the sake of the beloved. In films and books that are more dramatic, it is possible to sacrifice your own life, saving another or dedicating your own life to religious or humanitarian goals after the death of the beloved, as a sign of memory, loyalty and love for him.

When you sacrifice sleep to feed someone, when you leave the most delicious piece to your loved one, when you give up the monetary contract to be at the child's matinee - these are also examples of dedication, not so much heroic as in war and not as romantic as in books, but daily and undervalued.
