Respect is a category of social interaction, expressed in respect for the recognition of the personal dignity of the individual. The concept of respect is based on the noma of morality, morality, general culture and tolerance, and is manifested not only in the level of responsibility, but also as internal motives.

This concept is rather hard to describe with a couple of words, since it has many faces and components. This complex includes the level of justice and equality of all people, and these provisions in many countries are legally declared and have global value.

Attentive attitude to the feelings and desires of a person, tolerance regarding the implementation of internal needs is also part of the manifestation of respect in social interaction. The concept is close to education and that part of it that implements its own modesty and delicacy in dealing with others.

What it is

Depending on the sphere where this concept is used, it has some corrections. So in medicine and psychology, respect involves a certain attitudes towards the client, implying a complete and non-judgmental acceptance of the characteristics of life, world view, social status and personal desires. Non-interference in the psychological way of overcoming troubles or problems, despite the fact that medically recommendations can be given, but the doctor must understand that the choice of the final follow-up remains with the patient.

In social work, respect implies equal treatment, regardless of status. Respect for elders, children, homeless or billionaires should be on the same level. It is the social understanding of this term that is closest to the everyday perception and inner interpretation of respect.

Since respect is recognized as a general social norm and its presence is a necessary element of society at a humanistic level, the concept and regulation of this type of interaction is enshrined in law. At the broadest level, it implies the recognition of the freedom, territorial integrity and equal positions of the state among all the other countries of the world. Individual rights of the person to decent respectful treatment are enshrined in the laws of each state and guarantee the support and protection of a comfortable, psychologically safe existence, providing for punishments for violators. You can find all legal provisions in the category on the protection of human honor and dignity.

At the level of interaction, respect appears in the process of education, since it is an external social, somewhat artificial norm, which, however, helps to regulate many differences. This is not an innate quality, so children, people who have grown up outside a social society or in a society with low cultural norms, cannot enjoy expressed respect for others due to the lack of examples of the internalization of this behavioral strategy.

To consolidate a respectful line of conduct can be by strict prohibitions, using willpower and following the prescribed rules. However, it is impossible to prepare a list of the correct respectful reactions for all occasions, which, in essence, makes respect an act of creative adaptation. This is the need to listen to the interlocutor, to subtly notice his reaction needs. The ability to close the unpleasant topic in time, change the format of interaction - all these are moments of respect for the opponent, which require attentiveness and empathetic tuning.

Being a part of ethical education, respect has its own rules of manifestation: justice, equality, sincere and practical interest in the manifestations of another. At the same time, the complete absence of forced moments of manipulation or rigid upbringing is necessary. How people can negotiate on equal terms implies the active use of dialogues and finding compromise solutions in disputes.

Lack of respect may indicate a neglected educational process, inadequate self-esteem. In more serious cases, if a person has changed for the worse, the existence of mental pathologies accompanied by a violation of social interaction can be called into question.

The norms of society

The basic social norms relating to the expression of respect are reduced to the observance of legislation and the following of certain, not declared rules. The priority of them is the attention to others, comparable to the research interest. This is due to the fact that only after having studied the life and character traits of a person well, can one finally understand which line of behavior does not affect his dignity, will contribute to development and will eliminate arrogance and condescension.

Until an understanding of the interlocutor is reached, it is necessary to take into account the classical rules of etiquette, to express their attitude in a positive way. Respect is manifested in gratitude, and gratitude should relate not only to those areas where you directly seek help, but for any contacts. If you were held to the door or the seller helped you to choose a product - it does not matter that this activity is due to their professional tasks, the expressed gratitude shows respect.

The rules imply the provision of attention, manifested in the relevant compliments, without pathos and flattery, congratulations on official dates. In the presentation of people to each other, certain rules of etiquette apply, and, guided by them, you can avoid options for lack of respect. There is also a certain regulatory structure in relation to people with higher positions. It includes the absence of altercations, the exclusion of profanity, an increase in voice, it is recommended to respond to criticism with submission, to thank for the support provided.

Respect in the relationship of husband and wife are perceived as a top priority. In many traditions, marriages are possible in the absence of love, but are excluded in the absence of respect. At the same time, the reverse situation is not excluded, which also depends on cultural moments. So the eastern countries are famous for their attitude towards women, where she can have all material benefits, receive huge doses of attention, but at the same time can never be compared with a man in status. The place of women is not equal, but rather refers to things and acquisitions, which entails an appropriate attitude and lack of respect. Europe is distinguished by the desire to have equal positions, upholding rights and freedoms, and accordingly, in the marriage industry, one can speak of respect. The downside is that usually the Europeans suffer the sensual part, which is blocked by many social norms.

Separately, it is worth noting the age rules of respect, because in most cultures it is implanted and even requires an appropriate attitude to the older ones. Where age is revered in all its manifestations, from conversion to behavior (carry bags, make room). However, the issues are on the other side of the age criteria - respect for children, which is practically absent and not regulated in any way. That is why most of them treat them condescendingly, allow them to degrade dignity, to violate the boundaries of the individual. It should be understood that children are not only full-fledged personalities, but also those who, having absorbed a disrespectful attitude towards themselves, will spread it further.

Nurturing this quality

Respect is not an innate personal quality, this category has a chance to be developed to a high degree depending on the social environment. So, being brought up in an intelligent family, where the norms of etiquette and morality are initially observed by everyone, the child automatically adopts this model of interaction. It seems that everything happens independently and someone initially shows respect to everyone, and the other is not able to master the minimum social level.

Not only the family, but also the society that surrounds the child has a great influence. Many of the rules of interaction are taught in school, instilling appropriate responses. These include the formal rules by which interaction with elders is built. A primary school teacher, when confronted with new children, always assesses the initial level of development of the social skills of each person, as to which the educational process is built in the future. It also assesses the general social status of the family and the overall development of the next of kin, the possibility of achieving a common path in their upbringing with them.

In addition to a personal example, tips are used in the adjustment of behavior. With those children who initially did not know how to show respect, in the early stages, quite harsh measures of prohibitions and censures are possible. For those who have already mastered the norms, but it only requires an increase in the level or a detalization and demarcation of manifestations, advice and soft edification are possible. If education is conducted for a group of people, then it is good to use examples, stories, films and books with appropriate content. Children are quite flexible and quickly absorb information from the outside world, as far as adults are concerned, the key point is not educational orientation, but creation of motivation for change. A further correctional process is possible thanks to reading the literature on accepted norms, as well as visiting places with the corresponding society.
