Why do people believe in God

For centuries, humanity has believed in God. On whatever continents and countries in which people live, they all attend temples, worshiping the higher forces. Why do people do it, why believe in God? The answer is simple: the population of a country has already been born with a certain faith, for example, Hindus, Muslims, Greek Catholics, etc. People are not allowed to doubt the faith, convincing the existence of God.

In addition, there are still some social situations, because of which believers adhere strictly to established religious rules. Each church creates communities and gives members a sense of support when needed. Many areas of pragmatic life have nullified their values, and religious communities have filled such voids. Belief in God convinces people that it is possible to find a mentor in difficult times.

Most people, analyzing the complexity of creating the universe or contemplating the beauty of nature, realize that in our universe there is something more that could create such magnificence, as well as the physical world that surrounds us.

In the past, all religions have put forward their judgments about the history of life. In each of them it is stated that everything was created by a higher power - God. However, this is one of the most answers why people believe in God.

Perhaps the main reason for believing in God comes from the personal experience of a single person. Perhaps, someone heard the answer to prayers, someone received a warning at a dangerous moment, grace fell upon someone, and he recovered, becoming at the same time a happy person; someone, having received the blessing, successfully completed the work begun. So there is a feeling of happiness and tranquility, it prompts to go to church, to get acquainted with the scriptures.

At the moment, a huge number of people, despite the countless achievements of technology, are in a depressed miserable state. This is due to social problems and some deprivations of life, as well as the desire of the majority to compare personal life with the life of successful people.

Also, people believe in God in order to become happy, to understand the meaning of life. Some individuals need strict rules that allow them to control their actions; others, on the contrary, need more self-expression and freedom. Belief in God allows a person to understand his goals and values. Faith makes it possible to predetermine their priorities, rethink relationships with loved ones, demands on themselves and society.

Religion helps to find the answer: what is the meaning of life. For each person, this question throughout life remains the main. This spiritual problem is related to determining the ultimate goal of existence. Not everyone is able to answer what is the meaning of life. And even realizing the meaning, not every person can reasonably substantiate it. But what is interesting is that in every individual there is a need to find meaning and reasonably justify it. Solving the question of the meaning of life, human consciousness faces the inevitability of choosing one of two possible alternatives, since many worldviews are limited in two ways: religion or atheism. Man has to choose between religion and atheism.

It is difficult to define what religion is. However, one can definitely say: religion is a fact of social life. The word "religion" literally means harnesses, binding. It is probable that initially this term signified the attachment of a person to something unchanging, sacred.

The concept of religion was first used in the speeches of a Roman politician and speaker of the first century. BC e. Cicero, who contrasted religion with another word meaning superstition (mythical, dark belief).

The very concept of "religion" came into use for the first time of Christianity and meant a philosophical, moral and deep system.

Initially, the element of all religion is faith. Faith was and will be an important property of the consciousness of the individual, the main measure of spirituality.

Any religion exists due to religious activities. Theologians compose works, teachers teach the basics of religion, missionaries spread the faith. However, the core of religious activity is the cult (from the Latin language - worship, cultivation, care).

The cult includes an understanding of the totality of actions performed by believers in order to worship God or some supernatural forces. These include prayers, ceremonies, religious holidays, worship, sermons.

Objects of worship, the priesthood, temples may be missing in some religions. There are religions where the cult is given insignificant significance or it may be invisible. Although in general in religion the very role of the cult is very significant. People, carrying out a cult, communicate, exchanging information and emotions, contemplate the magnificent works of painting, architecture, listen to sacred texts, prayer music. All this helps to increase the religious feelings of the parishioners, unites them, helping to achieve spirituality. At the same time, the church imposes its own judgments, rules that can negatively affect the psyche of people.

Cons and pros of religion

Religion for centuries successfully enveloped human consciousness with a web of unrealistic illusions, constructions of the universe, afterlife, etc. Strengthened in the minds of people and in the memory of generations, becoming part of the cultural potential, religion received some cultural, ethical and socio-political functions.

Under the functions of religion understand ways of religious influence on society. The functions of religion engender both advantages and disadvantages.

An advantage of any religion is the fact that faith helps believers more easily to transfer negative emotions. In other words, religion provides consolation, leveling negative emotions (despair, fear, grief, experiencing sadness, loneliness, etc.). Religious consolation is a specific form of psychotherapy, and effective and cheap. Thanks to this consolation, humanity was able to survive in the historical past, survives now.

The second plus of the function of religion is that it facilitates the communication of people with a common worldview.

Communication is a significant need and value in life. Limited communication or lack of it makes people suffer.

Most pensioners are especially worried about the lack of communication, but it happens that young people also fall into this number. Religion helps everyone overcome this negative side of life.

The minuses of religion are noted only by historians, since theologians are convinced that religion has no minuses.

Historians attribute to the minuses the alienation of people on the basis of ideology. It is understood that the parishioners of different faiths relate to each other, either indifferently or hostilely. The more the idea of being chosen in religion is promoted, the more pronounced is the alienation between believers of different faiths. However, there is religion (Baha'i), the code of morality of which condemns such behavior and identifies it as a moral vice.

The second disadvantage, according to historians, is a decrease in the level of social activity of believers.

Social activity is a non-religious activity, the purpose of which is to serve the society, for example, socially useful work, political activities, scientific and cultural activities.

Religions, because of their ideological function, hinder the participation of people in social and political activities (participation in rallies, elections, demonstrations, etc.). This happens, as through direct prohibitions, but often due to the fact that there is no time left for social activities, since personal time is devoted to prayers, rites, the study and distribution of religious literature.

Atheists, trying to understand believers, are wondering what makes people believe in God.

Sometimes even religious personalities think about it, observing the diversity of religious movements.

Some believe that believing in God is a matter of personal preference, others believe that without faith, a person becomes an inferior person, others prefer to keep quiet because of the belief that people themselves have invented faith in God. All opinions are contradictory, behind each is a conviction, reflecting the individual's view of faith in the creator.

So people start believing in God for the following reasons:

  • birth in a believing family. Religion depends on the area in which the family lives (for example, Indians live in India, Catholics in Italy, Islamists in Morocco, etc.);
  • some individuals come to faith because they feel the need for God. They are consciously interested in religion, the creator, thus replenishing what they lack. They are convinced that the emergence of humanity is not accidental, everyone has a purpose. Such a faith is not a temporary impulse, but a deep conviction;
  • even an individual distant from religion, having survived the trials of life, turns to God, for example, during a period of serious illness;
  • some, having understood the answer to their prayers, begin to believe in God according to their personal desire, expressing their gratitude to him;
  • fear of the future pushes a person to faith. He may not have faith in reality, but will do the semblance of a believing person because of fear of being condemned by others or believing because of fear of what will happen to him after death.

The reasons why people believe in God can be enumerated endlessly, but it all boils down to the fact that an individual can have superficial or deep faith. It will reflect or not on his words and decisions, and the words spoken aloud "I believe in God" are not always true.
